I started my first business, a marketing & website design agency, in 1996. I wasn't a marketer, I had never designed a website, I didn't have any clients, and I was leaving a well-paid prestigious job, but it couldn't be that hard, could it? Over 25 years later and I have an answer to that question that might help you too...
Yes, it is hard. Anyone who tells you otherwise is probably lying or surfing a wave (I surfed the dotcom wave until it crashed). But, if you know why you're doing what you do (it's not just about the money!) and you love the people you do it with, the hard work pays off.
I work with smart business owners who have been running their consultancy, training or coaching business quite a few years and are wondering how they’re ever going to be able to slow down, retire or sell! Finding the time to deliver to your clients and to develop new products, processes or IP is hard! With all the time you spend running day-to-day operations, who has time to figure out how to create assets that will bring you recurring revenue, generate more leads and leave a legacy? But if you don’t create assets how can you get off the hamster wheel and stop selling your time?
My clients usually have three main problems: they have a lot of former clients with old expectations of them, they don’t have products but they sell their time, and they don’t have time to waste. The biggest mistake people make when running a business for so long is not realising quite how much fantastic IP they have hidden in their business and how capitalising on this IP will free them… they won’t have to work till they drop, without an exit plan, afraid of not leaving a legacy.
